What is the 25-Year Rule?

The 25-Year Rule is a U.S. federal law that allows vehicles 25 years or older to be imported without meeting EPA emissions and DOT safety standards. This makes importing classic JDM vehicles much simpler and more affordable.

📅

Age Calculation

The 25-year period is calculated from the vehicle's month and year of manufacture, not the model year. A vehicle manufactured in December 1999 becomes eligible in December 2024.

📋

Documentation

You'll need proof of age through Japanese export certificate, manufacturer's label, or other official documentation showing the manufacture date.

🚫

No Modifications

Unlike newer imports, 25+ year old vehicles don't require any modifications to meet U.S. standards. Keep that original JDM goodness!

Frequently Asked Questions

How exactly is the 25-year age calculated? +

The 25-year period is calculated from the month and year of manufacture, not the model year. For example, a vehicle manufactured in June 2000 becomes eligible for import in June 2025. The specific day of the month doesn't matter - only the month and year.

Can I drive a 25+ year old import in any state? +

While federal import is allowed, state registration varies. Some states restrict KEI trucks to off-road use only, while others allow full road use. States like Montana, Texas, and Oklahoma are generally KEI-truck friendly. Always check your state's specific regulations before importing.

Do I still need to pay import duties? +

Yes, the 25-year rule only exempts vehicles from EPA and DOT standards. You still need to pay the standard 2.5% import duty on trucks (25% on vans), plus any applicable state taxes. However, you save money by not needing modifications.

What documents prove a vehicle's age? +

Acceptable documents include: Japanese export certificate (with translation), manufacturer's plate showing manufacture date, original registration documents, or a letter from the manufacturer. We provide all necessary documentation with certified translations.

Are there any vehicles that are exceptions? +

The 25-year rule applies to all passenger vehicles and trucks. However, some vehicles may qualify for earlier import under other exemptions, such as "Show and Display" for historically significant vehicles (limited to 2,500 miles/year) or race-only vehicles.

What about Canada's 15-year rule? +

Canada allows imports of vehicles 15+ years old, making it easier to import newer models. However, vehicles must still pass federal and provincial inspections, and some modifications may be required. The process is different from the U.S. 25-year rule.
